ACEC/G COMMITTEES and FORUMS

The world (and ACEC/G) is run by those who participate! Serving on an ACEC/G committee is an excellent tool for promoting the engineering industry.  Please sign me up!

To sign up to serve on a committee or forum please contact the ACEC/G office (404-521-2324).

Active Committees List

Committees are charged with accomplishing specific, measurable goals that follow from the adopted Strategic Plan of the Council.

   Government Affairs
   Political Action (PAC)

Forums

Forums are groups with open membership that have common interests in an engineering discipline or market segment.  Forums are encouraged to meet in larger groups and have outside guests and/or specialists that speak to a particular aspect of the discipline/market.

There are special relationships that ACEC/G has with other groups that link with Forums.  Policies, issues, business matters, and conferences that involve member firms and our liaison partners are routinely discussed in these Forums.  Shown below are some of these linkages.

Environmental

Partners include Southface Energy Institute (Greenprints Conference and the Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable), The Georgia Conservancy (Blueprints for successful Communities), and Georgia EPD (where we have a formal, written partnering agreement)

Transportation

ACEC/G has a formal written partnering agreement with Georgia DOT.  The work with our partner occurs through the Georgia Quality Initiative, which has task forces that address specific issues.  The big event is the GQI Workshop (typically in December, in Athens).  Other transportation issues and modes are routinely discussed.

Building Systems

ACEC/G is heavily involved in GSFIC task forces that are writing the State Construction Manual, which will address predesign, contracts, fees, project delivery method, evaluations, etc.  ACEC/G also serves on an advisory group at the Southface Energy Institute that is involved in high performance school building prototypes.

Geotechnical

The Geotechnical Forum is primarily a place where firms with a common practice area can share experiences and become more familiar with each other. Participants focus on the professionalism of geotechnical practice because it seems to be more often associated with construction trades (especially, material testing). Of special interest are the implications of the new international construction codes and Georgia DOT's geotechnical, practice guideline.

Business Practices

The Business Practices Forum is a new program to allow operations managers an avenue to share information related to operation areas such as human resources, finance, information technology, etc.

Young Leaders

The Young Leaders Forum is a new forum for graduated Future Leader Program participants.

 Special Liaisons and Task Forces:

Editorial Board of the Georgia Engineer Magazine

The Georgia Engineer magazine is published six times per year by the Georgia Engineering Alliance and in cooperation with a private publishing firm, a4 Inc.  The magazine serves four engineering associations and is intended to be the external voice of engineering in Georgia.  ACEC/G has two seats on the editorial board, which controls content of the magazine.

  Georgia Engineers Week Committee

Numerous engineering associations collaborate in organizing the annual Engineers Week Celebration for the metro Atlanta area.  Activities include community and student outreach, awards, publicity and the banquet.  ACEC/G needs 3-4 active members to help organize and execute this grand celebration of our profession.

  Corps/ACEC/AIA Liaison Committee

A regional liaison committee meets 3-4 times per year.  The committee is composed of representatives from the Corps Division Office, five Districts, and the ACEC and AIA organizations in the Southeast.  Other events are 3-4 working groups and a regional conference in April 2002.

  Georgia AGC/ACEC/AIA Liaison Committee

This liaison committee was created to coordinate and facilitate communication and understanding among architects, engineers and contractors.  These professions are part of the larger “construction industry,” with amply common ground for partnering.  Meetings occur 4-5 times per year with an agenda driven by the group.  Initial tasks focus on local government permitting problems/delays and joint efforts in the “Canstruction” program that results in charitable donations of food.
