Berl Elder ScholarshipApplication Due by August 31, 2011ACEC/G has awarded scholarships for many years to worthy students enrolled in engineering schools in Georgia. In the last few years, the scholarship program has increasingly emphasized students that are an employee of ACEC/G member firms and that are interested in a career in consulting engineering. For additional information regarding application, click Scholarship. 2010 R. Berl Elder ScholarshipACEC/G provides funding through the Georgia Engineering Foundation for the ACEC/G – R. Berl Elder Scholarship. The scholarship fund was originally established to honor the second President of the organization. Over the years many generous gifts by consulting engineers have been made to endow these scholarships. Mr. Peter Giles founded the scholarship and served as the Chair of the Trustees for many years. Most of the assets in the endowment are due to his generosity, including a $50,000 bequest at the time of his death in the year 2000.
Lauren Spikes is a junior at Georgia Tech in Civil Engineering. She plans to graduate in 2012 and then pursue a Masters degree in Geotechnical or Environmental Engineering. From Lawrenceville, Lauren graduated from Collins Hill High School. She co-op’ed at Geosyntec Consultants and she is looking forward to completing her LEED Certification, and being involved in sustainable development, Green Technologies, and the preservation of historic buildings. Lauren also worked as a private tutor and at the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center.
During College, Lauren has been a member of Alpha Chi Omega where she was the recipient of the Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Award, the 2008 Homecoming Alumni Relations Committee, and an Assistant to the Vice President of New Member Education. She also has served on the GT1000 Team Leader Advisory Board as Campus Relations Chair, the Georgia Tech Women's Recruitment Team, FASET, and Freshman Orientation Leader. She participated in Mobilizing Opportunities for Volunteer Experience (MOVE) as Vice President of Projects, the Greek Week 2010 Executive Committee as CPC Spirit Chair, the Sophomore Leadership Council as Junior Representative, and the Georgia Tech Animal Welfare Association. She was the 2010 Georgia Tech IMPACT Scholarship Recipient, and was selected to be the 2011 CPC Overall Greek Week Chair. Lauren hopes to work as a consultant in Civil or Environmental Engineering or complete a PhD program in one of these fields.
